Basic Apple Pie
I have to confess, it's the filling of this Basic Apples Pie that's pretty basic. Making the crust can get a little complicated. If you want to make your own pie crust, go for it. It takes some practice, but it's actually a lot of fun.
If you don't want to make your own crust, the unbaked pie crusts you find in the grocery store will work just fine.
Ingredients
| 2 piece | pie crust, unbaked |
| 1/3 cup | flour |
| 15 | apples, tart |
| 1/2 cup | lemon juice |
| 1 1/4 cup | sugar |
| 4 Tbsp | cinnamon |
| 2 tsp | nutmeg |
| 2 tsp | cloves |
| 3 Tbsp | butter, chilled in pieces |
Preheat oven to 450°.
Peel apples, core and cut into slices. Put apple slices
in a large bow and sprinkle with lemon juice to prevent apples from
turning brown.
In a small bowl, combine flour, sugar and spices;
Mix with the apple slices.
Pour the coated apples into pie crust. (Pile the slices high, because
they will shrink as they cook. Place pieces of chilled butter throughout
the pile of apples.
Place dough round over
the
apples.
Tuck
edge
of top dough between edge
of bottom dough and rim of pan. Using your fingers, gently press both
layers of dough along the edge to seal.
Using a small knife, cut several slits in the top of the dough to let
the steam escape.
Place the pie on a baking sheet so that any juices that overflow during baking will not hit the bottom of the oven.
Bake at 450 degrees until crust
is golden, 10- 15 minutes.
Reduce oven temperature to 350°, and continue baking until crust
is golden brown and juices are bubbling. About 45 to 50 minutes.
Remove from oven, and let cool completely before serving.
